Midi Canal - Gailhousty Lock

As one travels down the Canal du Midi you come to the "Long Pound". About halfway along you reach the "Junction Canal" which leeds down to Sallèles-d'Aude, then on to the crossing of the River Aude to take you on to Narbonne. The crossing is known as "Gaihousty".

On the Left, below the house, there are a number of openings. channels that enable the water to escape during the times when the river is in flood. On the Right - a "dry dock" for the careening of boats - the bottom lock gates being double height to enable this.
