Canal du Midi. - the "Seuil de Naurouze"

The highest point on the Canal du Midi.

200 m above sea-level, is at the "Seuil de Naurouze", west of Castelnaudary. Water arrives, at the Partage des Eaux, from the 17th century reservoir at Saint-Ferréol in the Black Mountains, the inspiration of Pierre Paul Riquet.

Originally it was intended to be a "Grand Basin" - a lake to store water for the canal, but is kept silting up and was transformed into a park.

This avenue of Plane Trees are amongst the oldest in France, having been planted in 1806
